The nations most affected by the Ebola virus have been Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone. More have died in Sierra Leone than any other nation (3,955).

From 1991 to 2001, there was a civil war in Sierra Leone, in which 50,000 people were killed, 2 million displaced and the majority of the nation's infrastructure destroyed. It was followed by a military coup. The rebels were not fully put down until 2004, after UN peacekeeping forces were sent in. 2007 was the first presidential and parliamentary election following the war.

It's a nominally Muslim country (60%) with a significant Christian minority (13%) and only about 4% evangelical Christian, although it was the it is said to have been the first West African nation to be evangelized.

The Countess of Huntingdon, Lady Selina Shirley, was part of the 18th Century Evangelical Revival which gave birth to Methodism, and giving up her entire fortune she raised money to pay for ministers to preach the gospel, mainly in England and Wales. She also sent ministers to the United States where they came into contact with Negro slaves, who were converted to Christianity, and after helping the British fight in the American War of Independence, were promised their freedom. After an unsuccessful attempt at settling them in cold, inhospitable Nova Scotia, the British Government agreed to give them passage to West Africa, where some 1196 of them landed in what is now Freetown, on March 28th 1792. About half of them were 'Huntingdonians' and they kept the name of the church to which the ministers who had preached to them belonged. The English church was totally unaware of their existence for some years. Eventually a link was established, with the formation of the SierraLeone Mission, and has been maintained in various ways ever since. The Huntingdon Churches in Sierra Leone celebrated their bicentenary in 1992 with a procession through the streets of Freetown followed by a rally and many other celebrations. (Source)

Sierra Leone Conditions

Sierra Leone is said to have the highest rate if maternal death in the world. The civil war was brutal, and many were raped or had hands, arms or feet amputated. Over 10,000 children were conscripted into warfare. These children are now adults but are still suffering from the aftermath.

Life expectancy in Sierra Leone is the world's lowest at just over 51 years, and according to UN data, infant mortality is also one of the world's highest, at 94.43 per thousand live births.

Member Prayer Requests/Praise Report from last week

Deborah - Pastor’s 7th Anniversary Revival took place at her church through Friday, 11/16.

Barbara - I do need prayer for my son Jim, who has an upper respiratory infection that caused exacerbated COPD, which he is very susceptible to. He had a very bad time not being able to breath so they admited him to the hospital about 3 days ago. I will ask for prayer later for when he will have surgery on some neck vertebrae that was damaged in a rear-end accident almost 3 years ago. He will have them fused and have to wear a brace about 3 weeks. It will be a huge relief for him as it was causing the nerves in both arms to be affected as well, plus includes quite a bit of pain. He does not want to take any hard drugs for the pain, and until recently, Muscle relaxants were working.

Janis:

Pray for those suffering from the aftermath of the CA wildfires. Air quality has been poor where she lives (the Camp Fire is about an hour and a half away) and she wasn't able to keep Emily last week.

Frank - John has been called back to clay county. That’s where he did not listen to the judges. Seems to be doing OK personally. Martha visited him Thursday. Hearing coming up in Dec.

Thami's dad still on meds, waiting for scan before decision.

Mike and family (praise) had Emily back from college for a brief visit that was good.
