Violent seizure of property by nomadic Fulani herdsmen has been taking place in the "Middle Belt" region of Nigeria since at least 2014. A large number of them have been armed with AK-47's, weapons Fulani have not ordinarily been able to afford, leading to the conclusion that outside groups are arming them. Instead of moving to prevent the violence, the government has been calling for the provision of grazing land in the constested areas.
Since 2002, the North East of the country has seen sectarian violence by Boko Haram, an Islamist movement that seeks to abolish the secular system of government and establish Sharia law. Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan claimed in May 2014 that Boko Haram attacks have left at least 12,000 people dead and 8,000 people crippled. At the same time, neighbouring countries, Benin, Chad, Cameroon and Niger joined Nigeria in a united effort to combat Boko Haram in the aftermath of a world media highlighted kidnapping of 276 schoolgirls and the spread of Boko Haram attacks to these countries.

Nigeria is a religiously diverse society, with Islam and Christianity being the most widely professed religions. Nigerians are nearly equally divided into Christians and Muslims, with a tiny minority of adherents of Animism and other religions. According to one recent estimate, over 40% of Nigeria's population adheres to Islam (mainly Sunni, other branches are also present). Christianity is practised by 58% of the population (among them 74% are Protestant, 25% Roman Catholic, 1% other Christian). Adherents of Animism and other religions collectively represent 1.4% of the population.
Additionally the three major ethnicities (Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba) continually vie for influence in government and society. This has been a source of some of the government corruption.
Nigeria's government is modeled on the constitutional republic of the United States. There is a bicameral legislature, made up of a senate and house of representatives. The judicial branch is led by the Supreme Court of Nigeria. The president is elected each 4 years by popular vote and has a maximum of 2 four-year terms.
Muhammadu Buhari, President of Nigeria since March, 2015.

The HIV/AIDS rate in Nigeria is much lower compared to the other African nations such as Kenya or South Africa whose prevalence (percentage) rates are in the double digits. As of 2012, the HIV prevalence rate among adults ages 15–49 was just 3.1 percent. As of 2016, life expectancy in Nigeria is 54.5 years on average according to the World Health Organization, and just over half the population have access to potable water and appropriate sanitation; As of 2010, the Infant mortality is 72.7 deaths per 1000 live births.
In the 2014 ebola outbreak, Nigeria was the first country to effectively contain and eliminate the Ebola threat that was ravaging three other countries in the West African region, as its unique method of contact tracing became an effective method later used by other countries, such as the United States, when Ebola threats were discovered.
The Nigerian health care system is continuously faced with a shortage of doctors known as 'brain drain', because of emigration by skilled Nigerian doctors to North America and Europe. In 1995, it was estimated that 21,000 Nigerian doctors were practising in the United States alone, which is about the same as the number of doctors working in the Nigerian public service. Retaining these expensively trained professionals has been identified as one of the goals of the government.
Life expectancy in Nigeria is about 54 years; Infant Mortality is about 73 per thousand.
Nigeria is in West Africa, bordering the Gulf of Guinea, between Benin and Cameroon.

"Right now am writing you this message to you from maximum security prison Kirikiri Lagos state Nigeria, am a soldier who was sent to the north east of Nigeria over the terrorist know as bokoharam, just because we ask our superior officer to give us the right weapon to combat the enemy but they refuse, before we know we have been charged with mutiny that we refuse to go and fight. Dec 24 2014 we were giving death sentence at the military court-martial, then December 18 2015 the sentence was revised to 10 yrs imprisonment since then me and my colleague has been in the prison, just because we fall to the low group, but all I know is that God is good." — Ayodele, 4Steps.Godlife.com, 2/2/18

Member Prayer Requests/Praise Report from last week
Irene: Jos (Nigeria) where I reside and its immediate suburb is under siege. Fulani herdsmen are on a rampage killing, maiming , burning ... My neighborhood is safe though but we covet your prayers. The evil in Nigeria is on the rise because our President has an agenda to islamise. We keep trusting God for a change in government. The gates of hell shall not prevail in Jesus name.
Thami: Pray for him and his brother Jamel. Currently, there is no cure for Sarcoidosis. Thami is visiting him in Europe. (Please pray for his health as well.)
Frank: John's communications are very encouraging, but he's spoken this way about his spiritual life before. Frank is praying for discernment that they're not getting their hopes up only to get disappointed. Martha had her 79th birthday this past Monday. And we are very thankful for the degree of Health that we have; I at 81 and she at 79.
Janis: Praise: follow-up report was good--no additional surgery needed as the margins are clear and the lymph nodes are negative for cancer. Request: pray my meeting with the oncologist gets moved up from 7/20 so I can move ahead with any additional treatment she feels is necessary.
Barbara: No updates from her, but continue to pray for her safety and her health from pre-ventricular contractions.
Alice: Online Missionary Alice Park suffered a subarachnoid brain hemorrhage Sunday, May 13. She reports that she's praying with us all though not present. She is at home now, and on the long road to recovery and praises God for His faithfulness—Lamentations 3:22. Please pray her balance and strength will return. Please pray for her husband Dale who is now her vigilant, anxious caretaker.
Mike: Cindy will be leaving for OR tomorrow (7/12) for her neice's wedding. Mike has some follow-up visits for PT for both Emily and Luke. Emily is on new medication for pain, but has completed two summer semesters at Collin College (Praise).
